Where to go in Cambridge for your morning buzz

Cambridge, MA is a beautiful town which we love dearly.  We’ve worked in Cambridge, MA continuously over the past nearly 20 years since I founded NEDC in 2005.

Cambridge is a beautiful city directly next to Boston, separated by the Charles River.  Steeped in tradition and home to Harvard, MIT, and Lesley University…Cambridge just feels smart.  The people in Cambridge are generally wonderful, well-educated, worldly and generally interested in culture, their environment and the betterment of the world.

Educators and students alike from the world over are drawn to Cambridge by these prestigious organizations, bringing with them their own cultural beauty, affinities and culinary tastes.

This includes…coffee.

Here are three of our favorite coffee shops in Cambridge, Massachusetts:

BROADSHEET COFFEE ROASTERS

 100 Kirkland Street, Cambridge, MA

 www.broadsheetcoffee.com

Broadsheet coffee was founded in 2017 by Aaron Macdougall and markedly high on the coffee connoisseur spectrum–with their own roastery in Somerville at 373 Washington Street.  (Aaron is a Harvard graduate and former Manager of a major international investment bank.)  Coffee knowledge is a thing…and Broadsheet Coffee Roasters share their coffee knowledge liberally in a way which is both warm and inviting.  I would highly recommend the double espresso (my personal go to).  Anything across their menu is a safe and delicious bet.

1369 COFFEE HOUSE

Inman Square: 1369 Cambridge Street

Central Square:  757 Mass Ave

 www.1369coffeehouse.com

1369 draws its name from its original (and still extant) location at 1369 Cambridge Street in Inman Square.  This location has been humming for over 30 years—orginally established in 1993.  Their second location (in Central Square) was opened in 1994.  1369 has an array of quality coffees from around the world (Africa, Indonesia, Latin America and more) roasted fresh by local roasters.

This is just a great place.  At the far end of the spectrum from the pattern coffee franchise, 1369 feels homey and comfortable.  The coffee is fantastic and the pastries extremely hard to resist.  It’s a wonderful place to meet, work, write or simply enjoy some time with a delicious coffee and think.  I would highly recommend the Cold Brew with a breakfast sandwich on an everything bagel.  Just the best.  (Their bagels are baked daily by Wicked Bagel in Lexington)

They knock it out of the park.  You can see some of their awards here

TATTE

TATTE has four wonderful locations in Cambridge:  Main Street, Cambridge Crossing, Harvard Square and Third Street.

If you have never been to Tatte it is a joyous explosion of delicious food and wonderful coffee.   The Sunday morning lines sometimes lead out the door and its become a fixture of Boston and East Coast coffee culture.

The creative force behind Tatte is Tzurit Or who began Tatte 16 years ago in her home kitchen in Boston. This initial endeavor graduated to the farmers market in Copley Square and then expanded into the initial Boston locations.  Today Tatte locations area spread throughout the GBA as well as Maryland, Virginia and Washington, etc.

The menu and food selection are extraordinary:

I highly recommend the strawberry, roasted peach and chicken salad: (Mixed lettuce, spinach, strawberries, roasted peaches, red onion roasted chicken, and toasted cashew, goat cheese, served with balsamic dressing. (Gluten-Friendly version available) with a cortado.

The croissant breakfast sandwiches are also truly amazing.  Simple and delicious.
