At New England Design and Construction we are an unusual creative firm in the Boston home creation space—we embrace the role of the architect as master builder and thus offer concierge services for our clients from conceptual design through artisan build. 

I graduated from tufts architectural in 2002 and took a job with an international design firm shortly after graduation.   It quickly became apparent to me that I was lacking personal experience in the trades to efficiently design and direct others in the execution thereof.  

I had quite a bit of theory but needed practical, hands-on experience and knowledge.  I took a job as a carpenter to learn to actually BUILD. 

With further observation and research, I learned that the genus of the architect is in the role of master builder.  This is in stark contrast to today’s industry in which design and construction are arbitrarily fractured and very much distinct. 

That being said–this is what the word ‘architect’ actually means: 

The root of the word architect breaks down into “chief” or “master” (arkhi) and “builder” (tekton).

Archi and tekton come from the ancient Greek language, which originated as far back as 3,000 BC.

Architect = master builder

NEDC was born from a desire to embrace this meaning and legacy.
