An Introduction to Kareem Patterson – Production Coordinator at NEDC
We spotlight our amazing team members here at NEDC to share their diverse stories and backgrounds and let you get to know each of them. Kareem is an exceptionally talented, dependable and innovative team member whom we are extremely proud of and fortunate to have. He loves to travel and move around the world and is the one hustling and keeping the lines strung and everyone in communication. He’s a large part of the reason we have such a low rate of change orders here at NEDC and our clients benefit from his foresight, presence and hard work behind the scenes.
This is an introduction to Kareem Patterson, NEDC’s Production Coordinator:
Kareem was born and raised in Jamaica. He traveled as much as possible before settling in Boston, where he spent most of his time between Roxbury and Dorchester. Kareem’s interests growing up were heavily community oriented—he did community service and often helped others in the neighborhood. Growing up in the countryside of Jamaica and moving to the city he felt a bit of a disconnect, so he enjoyed getting out and camping. Kareem did various sports camps and participated in community-oriented groups such as C5 New England and city year.
His dad and uncles are virtuoso carpenters, so he was always a hands-on learner right there at a young age learning some tricks of the trade. Kareem went to college at Western Connecticut State University where he was studying to become a physical therapist. This was an interesting profession to pursue but he found it was not sufficiently hands on for him. Kareem pivoted to pursue design and construction, something he was familiar with and gained a burning interest in.
What Kareem loves most about design and build is the process of seeing it all come together. We sit and develop ideas of the functionality and ambiance of a space which is both aesthetic and functional. To then watch the changes from the existing conditions to the proposed design come to life during construction is extremely rewarding.
Kareem’s role at NEDC is the production coordinator: a role focused on developing strong relationships with our subcontractors and each building department as well as plans examiner and inspections.
Kareem’s role also consists of being the bridge between NEDC Design and Construction–helping to eliminate the amount of change orders during each project through increased prediction and coordination. In addition to this Kareem oversees estimates and the writing of scopes and contracts.
We are fortunate to have him!
NEDC: ARCHITECTS WHO BUILD. WHO ARE WE?
Considering a home remodel in Boston, but unsure where exactly to begin?
Boston homeowners seeking a significant home remodel can be faced with a somewhat daunting process as regards how to proceed.
Should one hire an architect? A builder? An interior designer? What comes first? What role is the most important?
And what’s the smartest investment—remodeling an existing Boston home or seeking a new purchase?
If this sounds stressful…it can be.
Generally, a home is an individual or family’s largest asset. Many families find themselves doing considerable research and due diligence—both online and with trusted contacts who have been through similar experiences.
There are many beautiful stories and homes out there–and there are some painful accounts as well. We’ve had clients come to us after spending six figures for architectural plans that once bid to contractors were projected to cost them double what they could afford for the actual remodel. A fully unworkable situation and painful for all involved.
There are complexities—but they can be made simple.
Placing one’s home in the hands of a company or professional as a homeowner requires meaningful due diligence ahead of time. We find our clients want certainty, truth, accurate communication with real information and guidance as regards costing, design options and the overall project approach.
