AN INTRODUCTION TO JOE WOOD: SENIOR DESIGNER
Joe is an extremely talented designer with a unique aesthetic flair. His beautiful designs are crafted with an array of solid building experience that lends tremendous practical value to each project along each the inherent beauty of each.
Growing up in the picturesque Green Mountains of Vermont, in the tight-knit town of Hartford, was a formative experience for me. Nestled among the lush green landscapes, I spent my youth immersed in the great outdoors, channeling my boundless energy into various sports like basketball, football, and lacrosse—an enthusiasm that even carried me into college where I played lacrosse competitively. But my passions didn’t stop at sports.
In my free time, I was an industrious young builder. My days were filled with creating mountain bike trails, constructing forts out of fallen trees, and even tackling an ambitious project in high school: a 10×16 log cabin. From a young age, I was captivated by the art of making things, whether it was intricate Lego cities or Lincoln Log masterpieces. I even took to the local construction sites, absorbing every bit of knowledge about the building process I could.
My love for understanding how things worked naturally steered me towards a job at a Ford dealership, where I found joy in diagnosing issues and exploring the engineering behind vehicles, thanks to the guidance of a Master Mechanic. At one point, I aspired to design BMW sports cars, but a serendipitous overlap of engineering and architectural design courses in college shifted my focus. The realization that architecture combined my passion for detailed craftsmanship and my growing interest in design was a revelation.
It was during my freshman year at Norwich University, where I had initially set out to study engineering, that I found myself excelling in architecture. My professors recognized my potential and encouraged me to switch majors, a decision that set me on a path I would never look back from. The transition was seamless, thanks to my hands-on experience in construction and a deep appreciation for design.
Now, as a Senior Designer at NEDC, I find immense joy in transforming spaces into something deeply meaningful for our clients. There’s a profound satisfaction in seeing a project come to life and knowing that our designs can help people reset their lives, offering them a sanctuary of comfort and functionality. What drives me in this profession is the attention to detail—crafting custom solutions that are not only functional and beautiful but also align with our clients’ budgets. Witnessing these designs enhance lives is what makes this job incredibly rewarding.
Inspiration for my work comes from the natural world—the patterns, textures, and emotions evoked by landscapes, waterways, and mountain vistas. Nature’s ability to create harmony and beauty is something I strive to replicate in my designs, infusing the built environment with the same essence that moves me.
